Hayman Island for the weekend

This Island Life | Summer in the Whitsundays

A few months ago we went island hopping in the Whitsundays as guests of Tourism Queensland to uncover some of the best islands in Australia. We got our tan on at Whitehaven Beach, gave our bikinis a good workout and drank French champagne like it was going out of fashion, but it wasn’t until the helicopters turned up that shit got real.

I like to think I’m a pretty down to earth traveller. I’ve backpacked around South America and South East Asia, trekked through jungles, climbed mountains and camped in the middle of nowhere. Fast forward five minutes into my chopper ride and my low maintenance travelling style had gone to hell. My luggage had already been transported to my room by boat, there were welcome cocktails waiting for my arrival and I was chatting to my pilot through a super cool earmuff headset. Nothing beats flying into a private island by helicopter, NOTHING!

Hayman Island is a private island on the Great Barrier Reef that’s open to regular peeps like you and me. The resort is off the chain luxurious and is the only one on the island.  If Hayman Island’s picture perfect beaches aren’t enough for you, there are two different pools on offer, including one that’s been voted amongst the best hotel pools in the world.  The resort offers a range of accommodation options from tranquil lagoon-facing rooms and suites with direct access to the premium pool, to private beachfront bungalows and Diane von Furstenberg designed penthouses.

I was there with my agents from The Remarkables Group and all the other bloggers including my awesome roomie Andrea from style blog Fox in Flats. We stayed in one of the lagoon rooms and settled into our new luxurious island life abode pretty quick.

We ended our last night of the trip on a massive high with the dinner of our dreams. If you’re ever on Hayman Island make sure you do The Chef’s Table, it was one of the highlights of my stay and I’m not even a foodie. The Chef’s Table is a weekly dinner hosted by one of Hayman Island’s chefs and sommeliers, and is a six-course dinner with matching wines including a dessert served in an igloo! Hayman Island was by far one of the best islands I have ever visited and I will definitely be back for a much longer vacay.

We flew into Hayman Island by helicopter courtesy of Hamilton Island Air, but you can also arrive on a seaplane with Air Whitsunday or on the Sun Goddess – Hayman Island’s own private boat transfer (we got it to Hamilton Island before flying back home to Sydney). Flights go daily from Sydney and Brisbane direct to Hamilton Island with Jetstar and Virgin Australia. For more information on how to get there, visit Tourism Whitsundays.
